Google Labs open-sourced the draft DESIGN.md specification on April 21, turning a Stitch feature into a portable markdown format for design systems. Google’s GitHub repo says DESIGN.md gives agents a “persistent, structured understanding” of a design system. The spec says the tokens are the normative values, while the prose explains how to apply them. The company also said agents can use those rules to check choices against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines requirements. The spec says tokens can cover colors, typography, spacing, rounded corners and components, and can be converted to tokens.json, Figma variables and Tailwind theme configs.
