Salmon Recalled Over Listeria Concerns
The FDA has announced a recall for one lot of Wellsley Farms farm-raised Atlantic salmon due to potential contamination with *Listeria monocytogenes*. The affected products were sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club, and consumers are advised to check lot numbers and avoid consumption.
The recalled 2-lb bags of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon are from lot number 3896 and have a UPC code of 888670025963. The products were sold between January 31 and February 7, 2026, at BJ's Wholesale Club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The potential contamination was discovered after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration collected a random sample for testing. The distributor, Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., is investigating the source of the contamination and taking steps to prevent a recurrence. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. *Listeria monocytogenes* is a bacterium that can survive and grow even at refrigeration temperatures. Unlike many other bacteria, freezing does not eliminate or reduce the pathogen. Food contaminated with listeria may not look, smell, or taste spoiled but can still cause serious infections. Symptoms of listeriosis can appear up to 70 days after exposure. Milder symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea, which often start within a day of eating the tainted food. A more severe, invasive illness can lead to headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Listeria infection is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and premature delivery, even if the mother only experiences mild, flu-like symptoms. BJ's Wholesale Club is in the process of directly notifying members who may have bought the affected salmon. Consumers who purchased the recalled product are advised not to eat it and can call 1-888-628-0730 for instructions on how to receive a full refund.
