World Press Photo regional winners

The World Press Photo Foundation announced its 2026 regional winners, naming 16 photographs that jurors highlighted for their emotional force (diarioextra.com). Mexican photographer César Rodríguez was among the winners for a project titled 'México, un clima cambiante,' documenting climate impacts on Mexican communities (diariodemorelos.com).

World Press Photo named the regional winners of its 2026 contest on April 9, selecting 42 winning projects and images from 57,376 photographs entered by 3,747 photographers in 141 countries. (worldpressphoto.org) The foundation’s regional model splits the contest into six regions, with winners chosen first by regional juries and then confirmed by a global jury. The current format began in 2021, and all regional winners now advance to the final round for World Press Photo of the Year. (worldpressphoto.org) (photoreview.com.au) The top global award is still pending. World Press Photo said the 2026 Photo of the Year winner and two finalists will be announced on April 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Central European Summer Time. (worldpressphoto.org) This year’s winners span war, migration, climate disasters, protest, and daily life, reflecting what the foundation called a year marked by “fracture, urgency” and resilience. The organization said 31 of the 42 winners photographed stories in their own regions. (worldpressphoto.org) (photoreview.com.au) Among the North and Central America winners was Mexican photographer César Rodríguez for “Mexico, A Changing Climate,” a long-term project on drought, floods, coastal erosion, and displacement in Mexican communities. World Press Photo’s project page says Mexico has 52 percent of its territory in arid or semi-arid zones. (worldpressphoto.org) The foundation says environmental disasters have internally displaced about 2.7 million people in Mexico over the last two decades, with projections reaching as high as 8 million by 2050. Rodríguez’s project centers that trend through scenes from places including Tabasco. (worldpressphoto.org) World Press Photo has framed the 2026 contest as the 69th edition of an award that began in 1955 and has become one of photojournalism’s best-known international competitions. The 2026 exhibition opens in Amsterdam on April 24 before touring to more than 60 cities, according to the foundation. The final announcement on April 23 will decide which of those images becomes the 2026 World Press Photo of the Year. (worldpressphoto.org)
