Alex Palou Dominates IndyCar Opener
Reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou opened the 2026 season with a dominant win at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher's much-anticipated IndyCar debut ended in heartbreak as he crashed out before completing even a full lap. Two-time champion Will Power also struggled in his first race with a new team.
Alex Palou's victory was not just a win, it was a statement. The Spaniard finished 12.4948 seconds ahead of Scott McLaughlin, marking the largest margin of victory in the 23-year history of the St. Petersburg event. Palou led 59 of the race's 100 laps. The win was the 20th of Palou's IndyCar career in just his 99th start. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver is a four-time series champion, having won the title in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025, and is also the reigning Indianapolis 500 winner. For Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, the race marked his official transition to American open-wheel racing. After two seasons with the Haas F1 team and a subsequent stint in the World Endurance Championship, he joined Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the 2026 season. The crash that ended Schumacher's debut on the first lap began when driver Sting Ray Robb locked his brakes heading into Turn 4. The incident also collected Santino Ferrucci. Two-time champion Will Power's move to Andretti Global comes after a storied 17-year career with Team Penske. Power, who won championships with Penske in 2014 and 2022, took over the No. 26 Honda seat vacated by Colton Herta. While Palou ran away with the victory, Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin finished second from the pole position. Christian Lundgaard of Arrow McLaren rounded out the podium in third place. The IndyCar series now heads from the streets of Florida to the desert. The next event on the 2026 calendar is the Good Ranchers 250 at Phoenix Raceway on March 7.
