IKEA Announces Major U.S. Expansion for 2026
IKEA announced plans to open 10 new U.S. locations in 2026, with stores planned for Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, and Huntsville. The expansion includes a strategic shift toward smaller, "city-center" store formats designed for dense urban areas, with new concepts slated for Culver City, CA, and Gurnee Mills, IL.
- This expansion is part of a multi-year, $2.2 billion investment strategy by IKEA to grow its U.S. omnichannel presence. - For its 2025 fiscal year, IKEA U.S. reported $5.3 billion in total sales, with nearly 61 million store visitors and over 457 million online visits. Its IKEA Family rewards program grew by 17% to 25 million members. - The smaller "city-center" stores range from 40,000 to 60,000 square feet and carry around 3,000 items, a significant reduction from the 200,000 to 500,000 square feet and 9,500 products found in traditional suburban locations. - In addition to the new stores, the company has been opening even smaller "Plan & Order Point" locations, which are dedicated showrooms for planning complex purchases like kitchens and bedrooms, with items ordered for home delivery. - The strategic shift toward smaller urban stores is a global initiative responding to increasing urbanization, with similar formats already open in cities like Paris, London, and Toronto to reach customers who may not have cars or time to travel to larger suburban stores. - Other new locations planned for 2026 include the first IKEA in Oklahoma, located in Tulsa, as well as stores in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Chantilly, Virginia. - In its fiscal year 2025 summary, Interim CEO of IKEA U.S. Rob Olson stated, "Looking ahead to FY26, we will build on this momentum, focusing on continued investment in the U.S. to make Ikea more affordable, accessible and sustainable." - The retailer is also expanding its fulfillment and service options, including a shop-in-shop partnership with Best Buy for kitchen planning and increasing the use of its stores to fulfill online orders.
