WiseTech and Hapag-Lloyd Pilot IoT Tracking

WiseTech Global and shipping line Hapag-Lloyd have launched a pilot program for IoT-enabled container tracking. The initiative aims to provide real-time, actionable visibility into global logistics networks. The partnership highlights the increasing integration of distributed edge devices into platforms for supply chain resilience.

- Hapag-Lloyd has outfitted its entire fleet of approximately two million dry containers with IoT devices developed by partners Nexxiot and ORBCOMM. These devices provide real-time GPS location data, temperature monitoring, and detection of sudden shocks. - The pilot program will process millions of data points daily through WiseTech's CargoWise platform, which utilizes advanced algorithms to convert this raw data into actionable operational milestones. This is intended to move beyond simple location tracking to provide predictive insights for customers. - A key feature being tested is "Live ETA," a dynamic estimated time of arrival tool that adjusts in real-time based on the container's actual movement. For shipments where Hapag-Lloyd manages the entire journey, this tool has the potential to improve delivery time accuracy by up to 75% compared to traditional static schedules. - The real-time data will be distributed to customers through various channels within the CargoWise platform, including Cargo Tracker and Container Automation solutions, with future plans to integrate with GLO, INTTRA, and Neo. - This initiative follows Hapag-Lloyd's successful implementation of real-time monitoring for its reefer container fleet in 2019, which provided valuable experience in deploying and managing IoT devices at scale. - The IoT devices are certified to the ATEX Zone 2 explosion-proof standard to ensure the safety of crews, cargo, and vessels. They also incorporate energy-harvesting technology and low-power consumption techniques to ensure a long operational life. - For WiseTech Global, this partnership is part of a broader strategy to enhance its CargoWise platform by integrating more direct, real-time data sources, moving away from a reliance on often delayed and less accurate milestone updates from carriers. - The global IoT in logistics market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 13.36% between 2025 and 2035, driven by the increasing demand for operational efficiency and real-time tracking. The adoption of such IoT solutions has been shown to reduce logistics costs by 20-30%.
