Michelle Suarez, a retired educator and former Lincoln council member, has joined the 2026 race for Lincoln City Council. (journalstar.com) Suarez previously served on the council after members unanimously appointed her on Jan. 9, 2023, to fill Jane Raybould’s District 3 seat through the end of that term. The seat covered southwest and central Lincoln. (klkntv.com) Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said at the time that Suarez had helped launch Prosper Lincoln’s early childhood education work. Suarez also served on the University of Nebraska president’s advisory council and the Woods Charitable Fund board. (klkntv.com) Lincoln’s City Council writes local laws, approves city budgets and audits city agencies. The body has seven members: four elected by district and three elected at large. (lincoln.ne.gov) The council’s at-large races drew nine candidates in Lincoln’s last city election in 2025, with six advancing from the April 8 primary and three incumbents winning the May 6 general election. Nebraska Public Media reported this month that Lincoln voters have recently seen one of the city’s most diverse council fields. (klkntv.com, klkntv.com, nebraskapublicmedia.org) Lancaster County’s 2026 primary is scheduled for May 12, 2026, and the Election Commissioner’s office lists candidate filings for that ballot. The Nebraska Secretary of State also lists May 12, 2026, as the statewide primary date. (lancaster.ne.gov, sos.nebraska.gov) Suarez’s return puts a familiar name back into Lincoln municipal politics as candidates compete over city services, development and spending decisions that come before the council almost every week. The council meets in regular session most Mondays at 3 p.m. in the County-City Building. (journalstar.com, lincoln.ne.gov)
