Apple's Foldable iPhone: iPad-Style iOS?
Mark Gurman reports Apple's foldable iPhone will feature iOS updates for iPad-style layouts and side-by-side apps. This could influence executive pitches on device versatility, highlighting productivity gains.
Apple's foldable iPhone, potentially named "iPhone Ultra," is expected to launch in the second half of 2026 and may be priced above $2,000. The device will feature a foldable internal display roughly the size of an iPad mini and a smaller external screen. To enhance the user experience on the larger screen, Apple is developing iOS updates that enable iPad-like screen layouts and the ability to run multiple apps side-by-side. The foldable iPhone will run standard iOS, not iPadOS, but developers will receive tools to adapt their existing iOS apps for the wider display, potentially including sidebars similar to those found on iPad apps. The internal foldable screen is expected to have a wider aspect ratio, making it suitable for watching videos and multitasking. Apple is also focusing on reducing the visible crease and improving the durability of the screen. Samsung Display is the exclusive supplier of foldable OLED panels for the foldable iPhone. Apple has increased its initial production target for the foldable iPhone by approximately 20%, reflecting confidence in the demand for the new product. The external display is expected to have a hole-punch cutout for the front camera, and Touch ID may be integrated into the side button.
