Nintendo’s new Tomodachi Life game arrives on Wednesday, April 16, ending a wait of more than a decade for the series’ next entry. (nintendo.com) Nintendo confirmed the release date in a January 29 Direct focused on the game and repeated it on the official store page, which lists Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream for Nintendo Switch. The company also says the game is playable on Nintendo Switch 2, with behavior “consistent with Nintendo Switch.” (nintendo.com 1) (nintendo.com 2) Tomodachi Life is Nintendo’s life simulation series built around Mii characters, the cartoon avatars players create to resemble family, friends, celebrities, or original characters. In the new game, players place those Miis on an island, adjust traits like voice, personality, height, and body type, and watch relationships, arguments, and daily routines play out in real time. (nintendo.com 1) (nintendo.com 2) Nintendo used the January Direct to show what changed since the Nintendo 3DS game, including new face parts, face paint options, island building, player-created items, and a mechanic that lets players pick up Miis and drop them near each other. The store page also lists a daily “Mii News” feature and “little quirks” and expressions that can be unlocked as characters level up. (nintendo.com 1) (nintendo.com 2) The timing matters because this is the first new Tomodachi Life entry in more than 10 years, according to Nintendo’s announcement. The previous Tomodachi Life launched on Nintendo 3DS in North America and Europe on June 6, 2014, after its April 2013 debut in Japan. (nintendo.com) (nintendo.com) The older game was also a sizable hit for Nintendo. The company’s current Nintendo 3DS software sales chart lists Tomodachi Life at 6.72 million units sold worldwide, placing it among the platform’s top-selling titles. (nintendo.co.jp) Nintendo has spent years getting back to the series. In an Ask the Developer interview published April 14, director Ryutaro Takahashi said he has directed the Tomodachi Life series since its first installment, and Nintendo framed the new release as the next step after work by veterans from Tomodachi Life, Miitopia, and Miitomo. (nintendo.com) As launch day approached, Nintendo leaned into the series’ oddball tone in trailers, store copy, and social posts, showing Miis in absurd news reports, awkward roommate fights, and exaggerated animations. By April 16, that long-running joke becomes a retail release date. (nintendo.com) (nintendo.com)
