Microsoft updates Edge with Copilot features
- Microsoft updated Edge on May 13 to add broader Copilot features across desktop and mobile, including multi-tab reasoning, browsing-history context, Voice, Vision and Journeys. - Microsoft said Copilot can now “reason across multiple open tabs,” while Browse with Copilot is rolling out to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States. - Users can find the new tools in Edge now, while Journeys cards appear on the new tab page after browsing activity.
Microsoft updated its Edge browser on May 13 with a wider set of Copilot features on desktop and mobile, folding in tools for analyzing open tabs, using browsing history for more tailored answers, and resuming past research sessions. The company said the update also brings Voice and Vision features to the Edge mobile app and makes its Journeys feature broadly available across desktop and mobile. Sean Lyndersay, a Microsoft Edge executive, said in a company blog post that the changes are meant to let users move “from first tab to final plan” inside the browser. Microsoft also said it is retiring Copilot Mode as a separate experience and placing the features directly in Edge. ### Which new Edge features did Microsoft say are now available? Microsoft said the update includes reasoning across multiple open tabs, more relevant answers based on browsing history and past chats, and a redesigned new tab page. The company said those features are available on desktop and, in several cases, now on the Edge mobile app as well. The Edge product page says Copilot can work across tabs to compare options, surface key details and help complete tasks without requiring users to leave the browser window. (blogs.windows.com) Microsoft’s support materials say browsing context may be sent to Copilot Chat, with user consent, to produce more relevant responses. ### How does the tab analysis actually work? Microsoft said Copilot can “reason across multiple open tabs” and use those tabs to compare information, surface answers and help users decide without repeated switching between pages. (blogs.windows.com) In its May 13 post, the company described the feature as available to everyone on desktop and mobile, with user permission. Microsoft has described the same capability elsewhere as Copilot working across tabs to compare options, explain what matters and provide answers in context. (microsoft.com) The company’s Edge site says the system gets more personalized over time by using what a person has worked on before. ### What happened to Copilot Mode? Microsoft said on May 13 that it is retiring Copilot Mode, the branded experience it had introduced earlier as an experimental way to bring AI features into Edge. (blogs.windows.com) Lyndersay wrote that, with the latest update, “helpful features” are now built directly into the browser. Microsoft had introduced Copilot Mode in July 2025 and expanded it in October 2025 with features including a streamlined new tab page, multi-tab reasoning and a dynamic side pane. (microsoft.com) The company had presented that mode as a toggle users could switch on to try newer AI browsing features. ### What are Journeys and how long does Edge keep that data? Microsoft’s support page says Copilot Journeys organizes browsing activity into task-focused groups with summaries and suggested next steps. (blogs.windows.com) The company said the feature can use page summaries, titles, URLs, searches and Copilot chats to help users resume work. Microsoft said older Journeys and their underlying data are automatically deleted after 14 days. (blogs.windows.com) The support page also says the feature is off by default and can be enabled in Edge settings under Copilot and AI. ### Can Copilot now take actions inside the browser? Microsoft’s support documentation says Browse with Copilot lets the assistant perform actions directly in the browser, including selecting, typing and navigating within a tab. (support.microsoft.com) The company said users can watch each step in real time and take back control at any point. Microsoft said the feature is rolling out to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States, with additional markets to follow. (support.microsoft.com) The same support page says all actions run locally in the browser and warns that the experimental feature may make mistakes or be affected by hidden instructions on web pages. ### Where can users get the update now? Microsoft said users can explore the new Edge features through its Copilot in Edge page or by downloading the Edge mobile app. (support.microsoft.com) The company’s May 13 announcement said the updated desktop and mobile experiences are available now, while Journeys cards appear on the new tab page after a user has enough browsing activity.
