Telangana CM Pushes for National AI Leadership

Telangana’s Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, has called for India to become a global leader in artificial intelligence, advocating for a dedicated national AI ministry. The push positions Hyderabad as India's prospective "AI capital," building on investments in data centers and talent development. The government is also emphasizing responsible AI with built-in compliance and ethics guardrails.

- To anchor its "AI capital" ambition, the government is planning a 200-acre "AI City" near Hyderabad designed to host AI companies, startups, and research units. The Chief Minister has also proposed establishing a national "AI Start-up Village" in Telangana to serve the entire country. - The push for national leadership includes detailed proposals for a comprehensive institutional framework, such as a national "AI War Room" hosted in Hyderabad to monitor global developments, and an "India AI Council" modeled after the GST Council to ensure uniform policy and regulation. - Major infrastructure investments are underway to support AI development, including a Rs. 5,000 crore (approx. $600M) 100 MW AI-ready data center from UPC Volt and a partnership between the Adani Group and Microsoft to build hyperscale AI data centers. - The state has launched "Aikam," a flagship autonomous entity designed to unify all state AI initiatives, including accelerating startups, mass upskilling, and managing a dedicated AI Fund-of-Funds. - To build a skilled workforce, the government has signed Memorandums of Understanding with Pearson for a Global AI Academy and with Georgetown University's AI CoLab to collaborate on applied AI research, particularly in the healthcare domain. - Chief Minister Reddy's vision extends across the full technology stack, advocating for India to develop its own GPU chip manufacturing capabilities and secure access to rare minerals to become a creator of core AI technologies, not just a consumer. - Hyderabad is a rapidly growing hub for Global Capability Centers (GCCs), hosting 20% of India's total, making it a key location for multinational enterprise tech operations and a significant source of digital talent. - These AI initiatives are a core component of the "Telangana Rising 2047" vision, a long-term economic roadmap aiming to expand the state's economy to $3 trillion by the time India completes 100 years of independence.
