The incident occurred on the Hotlum-Wintun route, a popular but challenging climb on the north side of Mount Shasta. The pair were descending when the fall happened. Rescue efforts were hampered by high winds and the steep terrain. A California Highway Patrol helicopter was ultimately used to hoist the climbers to safety.
