Cain Velasquez Released
Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was released from prison on parole after serving 11 months of a five-year sentence related to a 2022 shooting case. Velasquez, who was sentenced in March 2025, has reunited with his family following his early release.
- The charges stemmed from a February 2022 incident where Velasquez engaged in an 11-mile, high-speed car chase, ramming a pickup truck and firing a .40-caliber handgun at its occupants. The intended target was Harry Goularte Jr., a man accused of molesting Velasquez's young son at a daycare facility run by Goularte's mother. - Goularte was in the vehicle with his mother and stepfather, Paul Bender. Velasquez missed Goularte but struck Bender, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting occurred after Goularte had been released from custody on his own recognizance following his arrest on a felony charge of a lewd act with a child. - Initially, Velasquez was denied bail on two separate occasions, with the judge deeming him a risk to public safety and citing a "reckless disregard for human life". After approximately eight months in jail, he was eventually released on $1 million bail and placed on house arrest in November 2022. - In August 2024, Velasquez pleaded no contest to multiple felony charges, including attempted murder and assault with a firearm. Prosecutors had initially sought a sentence of 30 years to life in prison. - The man Velasquez targeted, Harry Goularte Jr., has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of lewd acts with a minor. His criminal trial is scheduled to begin in March 2026. Velasquez has also filed a civil lawsuit against Goularte and his family's daycare. - Velasquez is a two-time former UFC Heavyweight Champion, with notable victories over Brock Lesnar to win his first title and a defining trilogy of fights against Junior dos Santos. He retired from mixed martial arts in 2019 and had a brief career in professional wrestling with WWE and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. - Following his release, Velasquez announced plans to host a holotropic breathing seminar, an event focused on emotional release and stress management through breathwork.
