Vitalik Shifts Focus to Core Ethereum Protocol Upgrades

Vitalik Buterin is now focused on a major architectural upgrade for Ethereum, aiming to fix core bottlenecks in the state tree and virtual machine. This signals a strategic shift from prioritizing L2 scaling solutions to optimizing the base layer itself, which could improve performance and reduce costs for all Ethereum-based applications.

The focus on core protocol upgrades targets "state bloat," the ever-expanding size of Ethereum's data that nodes must store. This growth makes running a full node increasingly difficult and expensive for ordinary users, which poses a risk to the network's decentralization. A key part of this overhaul is "The Purge," a phase in Ethereum's roadmap designed to shed excess data. This includes implementing EIP-4444, a proposal for nodes to prune historical data older than one year, significantly reducing hardware and storage requirements. The state tree upgrade centers on replacing the current Merkle Patricia tree structure with Verkle trees. Verkle trees are far more efficient, producing much smaller cryptographic proofs ("witnesses") which is a critical step towards "stateless clients"—nodes that can validate blocks without storing the entire state. This base-layer focus alters the long-term role of Layer 2 solutions. With L1 transaction fees already dropping due to upgrades like EIP-4844 (proto-danksharding), Vitalik Buterin has urged L2s to innovate beyond simple scaling and develop unique value propositions. Buterin identified the state tree and the virtual machine (VM) as the two largest bottlenecks, accounting for over 80% of the costs for generating zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. Optimizing these core components is essential for making the base layer more "prover-friendly" as ZK technology becomes more integrated. These architectural changes could yield significant gas savings for certain applications. For dApps that repeatedly access adjacent data storage slots, the proposed binary tree structure could save more than 10,000 gas per transaction.
