OpenAI Secures Record $110 Billion in Funding

OpenAI has announced a landmark $110 billion funding round with Amazon and NVIDIA as prominent backers. The capital injection is set to fuel the company's development of generative AI, agentic models, and cloud infrastructure. Analysts suggest the round, which dwarfs previous AI investments, signals accelerating consolidation in the AI sector and will likely trigger competitive responses.

This new funding round sets OpenAI's pre-money valuation at $730 billion. Amazon is the lead investor, contributing $50 billion, with NVIDIA and SoftBank each adding $30 billion. The capital infusion marks a significant jump from an October 2025 employee stock sale that valued the company at $500 billion. Just last year, in March 2025, OpenAI raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation. The deal with Amazon goes beyond capital, establishing AWS as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI's "Frontier" enterprise platform for AI agents. OpenAI will also spend an additional $100 billion on AWS cloud services over eight years and utilize Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips. NVIDIA's investment is also strategic, securing OpenAI 3 gigawatts of dedicated inference capacity and 2 gigawatts for training on its Vera Rubin systems. This is designed to help meet the surging demand for AI compute that now sees ChatGPT serving over 900 million weekly active users. Long-time partner Microsoft, which did not participate in this round, remains a key shareholder with a 27% stake as of October 2025. The new deals do not alter Microsoft's exclusive license to OpenAI's IP, and Azure continues to be the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI's model APIs. The new valuation significantly increases the value of the non-profit OpenAI Foundation's stake in the company to over $180 billion. This bolsters the foundation's capacity to fund projects related to AI safety and resilience.
