Popular Hiking Trails Active in Fremont

Local hikers are frequenting the Fremont Hills Trail to Mission Peak for sunny outings. Other popular outdoor destinations in the area that have seen recent activity include the California Nursery Historical Park, Central Park, and Lake Elizabeth.

The iconic "Mission Peeker" pole at the summit of Mission Peak was installed on December 27, 1990, by a sculptor and park ranger named Leonard Page. The six-foot-tall steel pole serves as a popular photo-op for those who complete the strenuous hike, which involves an ascent of over 2,000 feet in roughly 3 miles. Central Park, a 450-acre manmade park, and its 83-acre Lake Elizabeth began development in 1960. On March 22, 1969, the lake was dedicated to Fremont's sister city, Elizabeth, in South Australia. The California Nursery Historical Park is a 20-acre remnant of what was once the largest retail nursery west of the Rockies, founded in 1884 by John Rock. The park preserves several historic buildings and showcases the horticultural history of the region. Beyond hiking, Central Park offers a wide array of recreational facilities, including a nine-hole golf course, eighteen tennis courts, multiple sports fields, and the Aqua Adventure Waterpark. Fishing is also a popular activity at Lake Elizabeth, which is stocked with species like trout and catfish. In July 2024, the Fremont City Council approved the first phase of a new community center project in Central Park. This initial phase, with a budget of $33 million, will include a 12,000-square-foot building for various community activities, with construction slated to begin in the summer of 2025 and finish in 2027. The "Mission Peeker" pole has faced challenges, including being cut down by vandals in September 2023. However, the popular landmark was repaired and restored to its original place the following month. The historic nursery grounds contain the Vallejo Adobe, built in 1842 by José de Jesús Vallejo. This structure predates the nursery and was later used as a tea room to entertain clients of the California Nursery Company.
