Michelin expands regionally

Michelin is launching a dedicated American Great Lakes edition of its guide, marking a geographic expansion of its U.S. coverage (midwestmeetings.com). Separately, The Ship in Brancaster (Norfolk) earned inclusion in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide less than a year after opening, signaling early national recognition for that new restaurant (edp24.co.uk).

Michelin is widening its map in two directions at once: a new American Great Lakes guide is coming in 2027, and a Norfolk pub has already landed in the 2026 U.K. guide less than a year after opening. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the American Great Lakes edition on April 8, 2026. The new regional guide will cover Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh, with inspectors already dining in the field and the first full selection due at a 2027 ceremony. (michelinmedia.com, guide.michelin.com) That marks a shift from Michelin’s earlier U.S. pattern of city or state editions such as New York, California, Florida, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Colorado, Texas, and the American South. The Great Lakes launch gives Michelin a six-city Midwestern footprint in one move. (guide.michelin.com, midwestmeetings.com) Michelin said the guide will be produced with support from regional destination marketing organizations, including Destination Cleveland, Visit Detroit, Visit Indy, Visit Milwaukee, Meet Minneapolis, and Visit Pittsburgh. Michelin says its inspectors still apply the same five criteria everywhere: ingredient quality, harmony of flavors, mastery of techniques, the chef’s voice, and consistency. (guide.michelin.com, michelinmedia.com) In Britain, The Ship in Brancaster has already made Michelin’s 2026 guide after opening in June 2025. Michelin’s listing describes it as a pub with rooms serving dishes such as pan-seared hake with butterbeans, chorizo, saffron and lemon. (hospitalityandcateringnews.com, guide.michelin.com) The Ship is run by sisters Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton, who also operate Sculthorpe Mill in Norfolk. Siobhan Peyton told the Eastern Daily Press they were “beyond thrilled” to see The Ship listed alongside their sister venue. (edp24.co.uk, (northnorfolknews.co.uk)) The two developments are separate, but they point in the same direction: Michelin is putting more emphasis on broader regional coverage while continuing to add newer restaurants quickly when inspectors think they meet the standard. In the Great Lakes, that means cities long outside Michelin’s U.S. map are now being judged directly rather than from a distance. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) For diners and restaurateurs, the next date that matters is in 2027, when Michelin plans to publish the inaugural American Great Lakes selection. For now, the company has started the inspections, and restaurants from Cleveland to Pittsburgh are officially in play. (guide.michelin.com)
