Hyrox Racing Boom Hits Fitness

The Hyrox competition — a global event combining running and functional strength exercises — is booming worldwide. A new training guide explains how to prepare safely and effectively by blending cardiovascular and strength workouts to meet the event's unique demands. The competition format is attracting athletes looking to diversify beyond traditional running or weightlifting.

Founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 2017 by accomplished event organizer Christian Toetzke and two-time Olympic field hockey champion Moritz Fürste, Hyrox was created to provide a standardized and accessible fitness challenge for everyone. The inaugural event in 2018 attracted 650 participants; by 2023, that number had surged to 175,000 competitors across 65 races worldwide. The competition's structure is consistent globally: athletes run one kilometer, followed by one functional workout, repeated eight times. The workout stations include a 1,000-meter SkiErg, a 50-meter sled push, a 50-meter sled pull, 80 meters of burpee broad jumps, a 1,000-meter row, a 200-meter farmer's carry, 100 meters of sandbag lunges, and 100 wall balls. This fixed format distinguishes Hyrox from CrossFit, which is a training methodology with constantly varied daily workouts that often include highly technical Olympic lifting and gymnastics. Hyrox's use of simpler, more accessible movements and its focus on endurance makes it appealing to a broader range of fitness enthusiasts, contributing to its rapid growth. Unlike obstacle course races such as Tough Mudder, which prioritize teamwork and mental grit in unpredictable outdoor settings, Hyrox is a timed, indoor event focused on measurable athletic performance. The sport has cultivated a field of elite athletes, with Hunter McIntyre (3-time World Champion) and Megan Jacoby being among the most recognized names. Jacoby was the first woman to finish a race in under one hour. Top male athletes like Alexander Roncevic now complete the grueling course in under 54 minutes. Hyrox is poised for continued aggressive expansion, with plans to host over 100 events in the 2025-26 season, aiming for 1.2 million participants. This growth is bolstered by major partnerships with brands like Puma and F45 Training, which will integrate Hyrox workouts into its global network of gyms.
