PathAI Pathology Tool Gets FDA Clearance

PathAI's AISight Dx has received FDA clearance for its AI-powered pathology diagnostics tool. The clearance marks a significant step for the use of regulated AI in analyzing clinical data and improving diagnostic quality.

This 510(k) clearance, granted on June 30, 2025, designates AISight Dx for use in primary diagnosis, building upon an initial clearance from 2022. The system is a software-only device intended for viewing and managing digital images from scanned surgical pathology slides. It is designed to aid pathologists in reviewing and interpreting these images to make a primary diagnosis. A key component of the FDA's decision was the inclusion of a Predetermined Change Control Plan (PCCP). This allows PathAI to implement and validate significant updates, such as compatibility with new scanners, displays, and file formats, without needing to submit a new 510(k) application for each change. This streamlined regulatory approach is designed to accelerate the pace of innovation while maintaining compliance. The AISight Dx platform is a cloud-native system, built to support modern anatomic pathology workflows. Its architecture is designed for interoperability and scale, enabling features like real-time remote collaboration, synchronized slide review, and intelligent case management to improve turnaround times. The platform is compatible with multiple whole slide imaging scanners, including those from Hamamatsu, Leica, and Roche. PathAI was co-founded in 2016 by CEO Dr. Andy Beck, who previously served as an Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, and CTO Aditya Khosla. The company's technology utilizes deep learning and computer vision to analyze tissue samples, a field where diagnostic errors can be as high as 10-15% with manual review. The company has raised a total of $255 million over five funding rounds. Key investors include General Catalyst, General Atlantic, 8VC, and Pillar VC. This financial backing has supported the company's growth to over 250 employees and its investment in machine learning and product development. PathAI has established numerous strategic partnerships to expand its ecosystem. It has integrated AI algorithms from companies like Paige, Deep Bio, and Visiopharm directly into its AISight platform. Additionally, it has collaborations with Northwestern Medicine for algorithm co-development and Discovery Life Sciences to deploy AI in a commercial biobank.
