Sinners converted four wins on Oscar night: Michael B. Jordan took Best Actor, Ryan Coogler won Best Original Screenplay, Ludwig Göransson earned Best Original Score, and Autumn Durald Arkapaw was awarded Best Cinematography. (hollywoodreporter.com) Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another entered the race with double-digit nominations and walked away with six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Anderson and Best Adapted Screenplay. (hollywoodreporter.com) Before this year only three women had ever been nominated in the Academy’s cinematography category: Rachel Morrison (Mudbound), Ari Wegner (The Power of the Dog) and Mandy Walker (Elvis). (variety.com) Arkapaw is of Filipino and African American Creole descent, was previously nominated for a Primetime Emmy for cinematography on the Loki episode “Lamentis,” and is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers; her work on Sinners made use of large-format capture, including IMAX/65mm and Ultra Panavision processes. (hollywoodreporter.com) Cassandra Kulukundis won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Casting for One Battle After Another, an award the Academy introduced this year as its first new competitive category since Best Animated Feature was added in 2001. (apnews.com) In her remarks Arkapaw invited the women in the room to stand and said “a lot of little girls that look like me will sleep really well tonight,” comments she repeated in the Oscars press room after accepting the trophy.
