Semiconductor Supply Chain in Crisis

The global chip supply chain is flashing red. South Korea is warning the Iran crisis could disrupt key materials like helium, while Samsung's DRAM prices have reportedly doubled in Q1. The price shock is expected to drive up costs for smartphones and PCs globally.

The crisis extends beyond finished chips to the very start of the supply chain. Helium, essential for heat management in semiconductor fabrication, has no viable substitute and is produced by only a handful of nations, with Qatar being a major supplier. An Iranian drone attack on Qatar's Ras Laffan LNG facility has already forced QatarEnergy to declare force majeure, halting production of helium as a byproduct and potentially spiking prices by up to 50%. This raw material squeeze is compounded by a massive reallocation of manufacturing capacity. To meet insatiable demand from the AI sector, chipmakers are prioritizing high-margin, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for data centers. This strategic shift is creating a structural shortage of the conventional DRAM and NAND flash memory used in consumer devices, with AI data centers expected to consume up to 70% of all high-end DRAM production in 2026. The memory market disequilibrium is reflected in dramatic price escalations. An 8Gb DDR4 chip, which cost around $3.20 in 2025, now commands $15—a 369% increase. In an unprecedented move that signals a major power shift, even Apple, known for its supply chain dominance, reportedly accepted Samsung's 100% Q1 price hike for LPDDR5X modules without negotiation to secure its inventory. The ripple effects are hitting PC and smartphone manufacturers hard, with analysts forecasting the steepest decline in device shipments in over a decade. Global smartphone shipments are projected to fall by as much as 13% and PCs by over 10% in 2026. This is forcing a strategic retreat from the budget end of the market, as memory now accounts for 35% of a PC's total build cost, up from 15% last year.
