Spotify sells real books
Spotify has started selling printed books in the U.S. and U.K. by integrating Bookshop.org into its platform, while also launching audiobook charts, a recaps page, and expanding its Audiobooks in Premium offering to 22 markets ( ). This ties discovery and direct purchase together — you can now discover an audiobook on Spotify and buy the physical copy through an indie-friendly retailer integration (newsroom.spotify.com).
Spotify users in the United States and United Kingdom can now buy printed books from inside the app through a Bookshop.org link. (newsroom.spotify.com) The feature went live on April 15, 2026 for Android users, and Spotify said iPhone users will get it next week. On audiobook pages, the app now shows a button that sends shoppers to Bookshop.org for pricing, inventory, shipping, and checkout. (newsroom.spotify.com, techcrunch.com) Spotify first announced the Bookshop.org partnership on February 5, then turned it on this week in its two biggest English-language audiobook markets. Bookshop.org founder and chief executive Andy Hunter said in February that purchases made through Spotify would financially support independent booksellers. (newsroom.spotify.com) The move folds book buying into a business Spotify has been building since 2023, when it added audiobooks to some Premium plans. Spotify said on April 15 that Audiobooks in Premium is now live in 22 markets and that its catalog has grown from 150,000 titles to more than 700,000. (newsroom.spotify.com) Spotify is also adding tools meant to keep listeners inside its book ecosystem after discovery. Its Page Match feature, which jumps an audiobook to the same spot in a printed or electronic book, now supports more than 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. (newsroom.spotify.com, techcrunch.com) The company said people who used Page Match streamed 55% more audiobook hours per week than other listeners, and 62% of Page Matched titles were books those users had not streamed before. Spotify also expanded Audiobook Recaps to Android and brought Audiobook Charts to Germany after earlier launches in the United States and United Kingdom. (newsroom.spotify.com, techcrunch.com) Bookshop.org gives the partnership a retail angle that is not Amazon. The company says 10% of regular sales on its site go into an earnings pool for independent bookstores, and affiliated stores can also earn the full profit margin on books they sell directly through their own Bookshop pages. (support.bookshop.org) Spotify has been arguing that its recommendation system can expand the audiobook audience beyond heavy book buyers. At the London Book Fair in March 2025, the company said audiobook listeners on Spotify were up 30% year over year in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, and listening hours in those markets had risen more than 35%. (newsroom.spotify.com) The printed-book button does not turn Spotify into a warehouse or a bookstore chain. It turns a listening app into a referral lane: find a title in audio, tap once, and buy the paper copy from a bookseller network that handles the sale. (newsroom.spotify.com, tech.yahoo.com)
