Charleston's Culinary Scene Keeps Growing
The Charleston food scene continues to expand, with 14 new restaurants highlighted as noteworthy openings from January alone. This recent wave adds even more diversity to the city's already renowned dining landscape, offering a range of new options for locals and visitors.
The city's food scene is a significant economic driver, with the broader tourism industry generating a record $14 billion in 2024. The restaurant sector alone contributes an estimated $7.7 billion to the regional economy and supports more than 60,000 jobs. This growth is fueled by 7.9 million annual visitors who are spending more, with the average expenditure per adult reaching $1,105 per trip in 2024. That same year, the area sold a record 4.94 million hotel room nights. National recognition continues to pour in, with TripAdvisor naming Charleston one of the best food cities in the U.S. in early 2024. The city's chefs and restaurants consistently earn nominations for the prestigious James Beard Awards. Recent openings have added to the culinary diversity, including new Filipino concepts like Kultura and West African cuisine from Bintü Atelier. These join establishments from acclaimed chefs like Sean Brock, who brought his Joyland restaurant to the city. Despite the boom, challenges persist. Over 50 small restaurants closed in 2024, facing pressures from rising food and rent costs, intense competition, and a severe labor shortage. The development pipeline, however, remains robust. In early 2024, a list of restaurants "coming soon" hit 80, the longest such list seen in 15 years, indicating continued expansion across the metro area.
