Broward detectives are offering up to $10,000 for tips in the 2020 killing of Bree Black, a 27-year-old transgender woman in Pompano Beach. (sheriff.org) The Broward Sheriff’s Office said on April 21 that cold-case detectives have identified a person of interest but have not named him because the investigation is active. Detectives said the man is serving time in a Florida prison for an unrelated violent crime. (wsvn.com) Detective Andrew Gianino said Black and the person of interest were in a physical fight two or three days before the shooting on July 3, 2020. Investigators said they believe that altercation was the motive. (local10.com) Black was shot outside her home near Northwest 12th Street and Third Avenue after 10:15 p.m., deputies said. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue pronounced her dead within about 10 to 15 minutes. (wsvn.com) Detectives said Black had been at a nearby gender-reveal party that night, went home to charge her phone, then stepped outside to wait for a ride. Gianino said she had been on a FaceTime call with a friend shortly before she was chased, shot and killed. (local10.com) The reward is split between two programs. Broward Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000, and the Florida Sheriffs Association Criminal Apprehension Program is offering up to another $5,000 if an anonymous tip leads to an arrest. (sheriff.org) The case has drawn renewed attention because detectives now say they know who they want to hear more about, after years with no named suspect. In August 2020, Broward investigators said hundreds of people were in the area when Black was killed, but few leads came in. (nbcmiami.com) On April 21, detectives also put up a banner with Black’s photo near the crime scene and asked for help from anyone who saw the earlier fight, was at the party that night, or knows about the gun used in the killing. (local10.com) People with information can call Gianino at 954-321-4376, or submit an anonymous tip to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Detectives said the case remains unsolved and the public tip line is still central to making an arrest. (wsvn.com)
