Medical School Entry Is Getting More Competitive

The average grades required for medical school admission are rising again, making entry more competitive than ever. According to an article in Psychology Today, high marks are no longer sufficient, with admissions committees placing greater value on holistic profiles that include volunteering, research, and leadership. The increasing pressure highlights the importance of self-care and building resilience for pre-med students.

While the overall acceptance rate for applicants to at least one U.S. allopathic (MD) medical school was about 44.5% in 2025, the rates for individual schools are far lower, with most accepting fewer than 7% of applicants. The average GPA for students starting medical school is now around 3.75, with a mean MCAT score of approximately 511-512. In response to rising stats, nearly all medical schools now use a "holistic review" process. This framework, developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), balances academic metrics with an applicant's personal experiences and attributes to build a more diverse student body. Admissions committees look for specific non-academic qualifications to gauge an applicant's suitability. These often include several hundred hours of clinical volunteering, exposure to a research environment, and around 40 to 60 hours of physician shadowing to ensure an applicant understands a doctor's daily life. For those passionate about life sciences but not patient-facing care, roles like a bioinformatics scientist offer an alternative. Professionals in this field use computer science and data analysis to interpret large-scale biological data, aiding in everything from new drug development to personalized medicine. The educational pathways diverge significantly. Becoming a physician requires four years of medical school followed by a residency lasting three to seven years. A career in bioinformatics or computational biology typically involves a bachelor's degree followed by a master's or PhD for most senior roles. Daily work in these fields differs greatly. A computational biologist's day often revolves around coding, developing algorithms, analyzing data, and collaborating with research teams, sometimes entirely remotely. This contrasts with the direct, hands-on patient interaction that defines a physician's career. The career outlook for life science tech roles is strong. Employment for computer and information research scientists, which includes bioinformaticians, is projected to grow 26% by 2033, driven by the increasing importance of data in medical research and biotechnology.
