Critics are praising Kidman's performance and the show's ambitious storytelling.

The series is based on Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta novels, which have sold over 120 million copies worldwide since 1990. This adaptation marks the first time the forensic pathologist has been brought to the screen. Prime Video ordered two seasons of the show in September 2024. Nicole Kidman plays Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist who uses technology to solve crimes. Kidman prepared for the role by spending time with a medical examiner in Tennessee, learning how to hold a scalpel and dissect organs. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Dorothy Scarpetta, Kay's older and "slutty" sister. Liz Sarnoff, who has been a fan of the novels since their early days, developed and wrote the series. David Gordon Green directed five episodes and served as executive producer. The first season adapts both "Postmortem" (1990) and "Autopsy" (2021).
