FMCSA registration process 'broke'
An investigative feature highlights critical flaws in federal safety enforcement, calling the FMCSA’s registration process 'broke' due to the influx of new carriers.
The FMCSA's registration process is under scrutiny due to a surge in new carriers, potentially overwhelming the system. This influx, fueled by strong market conditions and financial assistance, has led to concerns about safety enforcement. The agency is working to modernize its registration system to address these issues and combat fraud. One key focus is on weeding out "chameleon carriers" that re-register to evade compliance. The FMCSA is implementing stricter controls over PIN requests and enhancing login procedures with identity proofing. They're also cracking down on address fraud, requiring verifiable physical business addresses to prevent fake office locations. To ensure safety, the FMCSA is considering a proficiency exam for new carriers to verify their understanding of federal safety regulations. They are also intensifying investigations into Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) providers and CDL mills that issue fraudulent certifications. The FMCSA has already removed over 7,000 ELDT providers from the Training Provider Registry.
