Vodafone Expands Private 5G, Onboards New Vendors

Vodafone now operates 173 private 5G networks in 20 countries, with 60% located on customer premises. The company also signaled that new vendors are entering its supply chain. This move toward vendor diversification could expand opportunities for Open RAN solutions and intensify standards competition between incumbent suppliers and new market entrants.

- Vodafone's vendor diversification aims to have 30% of its European cell sites running on Open RAN technology by 2030, a move intended to break dependency on traditional single-vendor RAN architectures. - Recent strategic partnerships include a five-year agreement with Ericsson to deploy Open RAN-compatible Massive MIMO radios and AI-powered automation solutions across several European markets. Dell Technologies was also selected as a key infrastructure provider for Vodafone's Open RAN deployment in Europe. - The move is part of Vodafone's broader "Spring 6" initiative, a major Radio Access Network (RAN) technology refresh for more than 170,000 sites across Europe and Africa. - Massimiliano Mesenasco, Vodafone's head of private 5G, noted the company is adding two new network vendors to its existing partners, Nokia and HPE, with Ericsson being a likely addition. - The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards underpinning these networks have evolved significantly; Release 16 enhanced low-latency capabilities for industrial use cases, while Releases 17 and 18 ("5G Advanced") focus on integrating with Time-Sensitive Networks (TSN) and implementing machine learning at different network levels. - Vodafone is increasingly deploying 5G Standalone (SA) for its private network solutions, enabling ultra-low latency and high availability that can be paired with Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) for on-premise data processing. - High-profile deployments include Europe's first hybrid 5G private network for Porsche's Nardò Technical Center in Italy and a 5G network for Ford's factory in the UK to support electric vehicle production. - The global private 5G network market is forecast to expand significantly, with various analysts predicting it to reach between $12.8 billion and $27.87 billion by 2030/2031.
