REAL ID adds paperwork to travel

U.S. travelers are now facing stricter REAL ID enforcement that changes which IDs are accepted for domestic flights, adding a new layer of pre‑flight friction. (thetraveler.org). At the same time, Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International saw roughly 300 delays and 22 cancellations on April 13 — a disruption totaling 322 incidents that hit carriers including Spirit, JetBlue and Southwest and routes to Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles. ( ).

Domestic fliers in the United States now need a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted document, and travelers without one can face extra screening or a fee-based identity check. (tsa.gov) The Transportation Security Administration began full REAL ID enforcement on May 7, 2025, after publishing a final rule in January 2025 that kept the deadline in place. The rule applies to boarding commercial aircraft and other federal purposes covered by the 2005 law. (tsa.gov) At airport checkpoints, adults 18 and older can still use other documents instead of a REAL ID, including a United States passport, passport card, Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler cards, military identification, permanent resident cards, and some tribal and foreign passports. A temporary driver’s license does not count. (tsa.gov) Since February 1, 2026, travelers who show up without an acceptable ID have had a new fallback: a $45 Transportation Security Administration ConfirmID identity-verification option that covers a 10-day travel period. The agency says that process happens before the passenger enters the security line and can vary by airport. (tsa.gov) That adds a second layer of friction to trips already vulnerable to routine airport disruptions. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport began overnight runway maintenance on Monday, April 13, 2026, with alternating closures that shift all arrivals and departures onto a single runway during parts of April 13, April 14, and April 15. (broward.org) Broward County’s airport advisory says the North Runway was set to close from 12:01 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. on April 13, from 12:01 a.m. to noon on April 14, and again from 12:01 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. on April 15. During those windows, all flight operations use the South Runway. (broward.org) The airport’s public delays page showed no standing travel advisory when checked on April 14, 2026, and directed passengers to airlines, arrivals and departures pages, and the Federal Aviation Administration command center for current conditions. That means travelers still need to piece together airport status, airline operations, and ID rules before leaving for the terminal. (broward.org) The REAL ID law itself dates to 2005 and was written to set minimum security standards for state-issued licenses and identification cards used for federal purposes. The Transportation Security Administration says the requirement grew out of a recommendation by the September 11 Commission. (tsa.gov) For travelers booking domestic flights now, the practical checklist is narrower than it used to be: bring a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport, do not rely on a temporary license, and expect extra time if your airport is also dealing with runway work or other operational strain.
