Palo Alto Networks CEO: Use AI or Disappear

Nikesh Arora, CEO of Palo Alto Networks, delivered a stark warning at the Startup Policy Forum, stating it's the "best time to build" but only for those who embrace AI. He argued that most applications will be rewritten in the AI era and that engineers who can't code with AI tools are already falling behind.

Arora's own company, Palo Alto Networks, is treating AI as a core architectural shift, announcing an expanded security ecosystem to protect what it calls 'AI Factories'. The strategy involves embedding AI-powered security directly into data centers and 5G networks, partnering with companies like Nokia to build secure infrastructure for large-scale AI model training. The push for AI integration is reshaping software engineering roles. While concerns exist about job displacement, data suggests AI is creating new opportunities and shifting developers toward more strategic work. The software development AI market is projected to grow from $24 billion in 2024 to $61 billion by 2029. However, the impact isn't uniform across experience levels. A Stanford study found a 13% relative decline in employment for early-career engineers (ages 22-25) in roles most exposed to AI. Job openings for traditional frontend and mobile engineers have dropped by over 20%, while demand for AI scientists and machine learning engineers has surged by 80% and 70%, respectively. Startups are at the forefront of this adoption curve. As of August 2024, roughly 70% of startups were paying for at least one AI tool, with SaaS companies leading at nearly 80% utilization. This isn't just for internal productivity; many are pivoting to become AI-native companies themselves. This hybrid AI-human model is yielding significant speed advantages. Startups combining AI tools with development teams report slashing prototyping time by up to 40% and delivering products 30% faster than with traditional methods. HubSpot's research found AI saves the average worker about 2.5 hours per day on repetitive tasks. For graduating engineers, this signals a clear demand for a new skill set. Employers are paying up to a 56% wage premium for engineers with AI skills. The most productive and sought-after developers are those who combine a deep understanding of software architecture with proficiency in cutting-edge AI tools and workflows.
