Uganda Rugby President Appointed to Rugby Africa Board
Godwin Kayangwe, the President of the Uganda Rugby Union, has been appointed to the Executive Committee of Rugby Africa. The appointment gives Uganda a key voice in the development of the sport across the continent for the next four years.
Godwin Kayangwe's journey to the top of African rugby administration began with his first election as President of the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) in April 2019, where he won a decisive 44-9 victory over his opponent. He was subsequently re-elected for a second term in April 2023, securing a landslide win with 65 votes. Before his presidency, Kayangwe was deeply involved in the sport's administration. He served as the General Secretary of the URU from 2015 to 2019, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations and implementation of the union's strategic plan. His experience also includes roles as the manager for the Uganda Rugby Cranes and the chair of sponsorship and marketing for the union. Kayangwe, a former player for the Black Pirates Rugby Club, has been a vocal advocate for youth development and expanding the sport's reach throughout Uganda. His vision includes a strong focus on schools and tertiary institutions to nurture talent and ensure a sustainable future for Ugandan rugby. His appointment to the Rugby Africa Executive Committee marks a significant return of Ugandan influence at the continental level. The position provides Uganda with a direct voice in shaping policies, competition structures, and development programs across Africa. This move is seen as a reflection of Uganda's growing stature in the sport. The election took place during the 17th General Assembly of Rugby Africa, which was hosted in Kampala, Uganda, further highlighting the country's increasing prominence in the African rugby landscape. Kayangwe's role on the Executive Committee will be pivotal as Rugby Africa undergoes a period of reform aimed at modernizing its governance. This appointment is not Kayangwe's first foray into continental sports administration. He also serves as the First Vice President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, a position he was re-elected to in March 2025. His multifaceted leadership roles underscore his commitment to the development of sports within Uganda and across Africa.
