Huawei debuts 'SuperPoD' computing at MWC
At MWC Barcelona 2026, Huawei debuted its new SuperPoD portfolio, including the Atlas 950. The company is positioning the product line as a new option for global computing infrastructure. The launch is part of a series of AI-focused infrastructure announcements at the conference.
The Huawei Atlas 950 SuperPoD is a massive-scale AI computing cluster, integrating 8,192 of its own Ascend 950 NPUs (Neural Processing Units). It boasts staggering theoretical performance figures, claiming 8 exaFLOPS in FP8 and 16 exaFLOPS in FP4 precision, targeting both large-scale AI model training and inference. For perspective, Huawei claims its interconnect bandwidth of 16.3 petabytes per second is over 10 times the total peak bandwidth of the entire global internet. This launch represents a "brute-force" strategy to compete with established players like Nvidia, focusing on overwhelming scale. While Nvidia’s next-gen Vera Rubin-based systems may offer higher performance per chip, Huawei aims to compensate by deploying a vastly larger number of accelerators. The full Atlas 950 SuperPoD requires significant physical space, with a configuration of 160 cabinets occupying about 1,000 square meters. The move comes as enterprises are rapidly shifting from simple chatbots to more complex, multi-step "agentic workflows." These AI agents can orchestrate complex processes, and their adoption is projected to surge, with Gartner forecasting that by 2028, around 15% of workplace decisions will be handled autonomously by AI agents. This trend is driving demand for the massive, low-latency computing infrastructure that Huawei is targeting. In the adtech space, this level of computing power is directly relevant to the industry's shift towards AI-driven optimization, particularly in programmatic advertising. With the deprecation of third-party cookies, the reliance on first-party data and complex modeling for targeting and measurement is growing. AI is becoming central to automating ad buying, optimizing bidding strategies, and navigating an increasingly fragmented landscape that includes Connected TV (CTV) and retail media networks. From a leadership perspective, the transition to a CTO role in a B2B SaaS company requires shifting from purely technical execution to aligning technology with broader business strategy. This involves not just managing infrastructure, but also leading cross-functional teams, making strategic investment decisions, and ensuring the tech stack can scale efficiently. A key challenge is resisting one-off custom development for large clients to maintain a scalable, standardized product. The UK's tech scene presents a fertile ground for such leadership roles, with London startups raising a record £2.69 billion in Q1 2025 alone, significantly more than France, Germany, and Spain combined. Key growth sectors include AI/ML, FinTech, and Health & Life Sciences. Companies like Artios Pharma and BVNK are part of a wave of "soonicorns" valued between $250 million and $1 billion, indicating a maturing ecosystem with opportunities for experienced technical leaders. On the personal interest front, the 2026 Formula 1 season is poised for a major shake-up with significant regulation changes, including new power units and active aerodynamics. Following Lando Norris's first world title in 2025, Mercedes and Ferrari have shown strong early pace in testing, while Red Bull's new in-house power unit remains a wildcard. Meanwhile, travel for the season opener in Melbourne has been complicated by the cancellation of a Pirelli tire test in Bahrain due to security concerns in the Middle East. For Londoners, March brings several transport disruptions for maintenance and upgrades, affecting most Underground lines, particularly on weekends. On a brighter note, the city's annual St Patrick's Day parade and festival are scheduled for Sunday, March 15, with over 50,000 people expected to attend the procession to Trafalgar Square. However, public access to police stations continues to be reduced, with Hounslow Police Station no longer offering 24/7 counter service, leaving only two such stations in the entire city.
