CapCut's AI Video Generator Sparks Pushback
CapCut's new AI features can now auto-generate entire videos with scripts, visuals, and voiceovers in under 20 seconds for free. The development is seen as a catalyst for YouTube's new "Inauthentic Content" policy, as platforms begin to guard against a potential flood of mass-produced, low-quality AI content.
CapCut, owned by ByteDance, has evolved from a simple companion app for TikTok to a full-featured video editing platform with over 300 million monthly users. Its suite of AI tools includes a script generator, text-to-video creation, AI-powered effects, and an auto-captioning feature with 92-95% accuracy for clear speech. This allows creators to significantly reduce production time, with some reporting an 80% decrease in time spent editing. The platform offers a range of AI-driven features designed for social media content, such as smart highlights to pull key moments from longer videos and auto-reframing to adapt content for different aspect ratios like 16:9 and 9:16 for Reels and TikTok. Users can also generate voiceovers in over 70 languages and use more than 100 digital avatars, or even clone their own, to create content without appearing on camera. In response to the rise of synthetic media, YouTube updated its policies throughout 2024 and 2025, now requiring creators to disclose when they use AI to realistically alter or generate content. This includes making a real person appear to say or do something they didn't, altering footage of a real event, or generating a realistic-looking scene that never occurred. A label will appear in the video's description to inform viewers. YouTube's "inauthentic content" policy specifically targets mass-produced, low-effort videos for demonetization, such as those using AI-narrated slideshows, reused compilations without new commentary, or content that relies heavily on templates. The platform's stance is that AI-generated videos can still be monetized if they provide original, creative, and meaningful value to the viewer and do not violate community guidelines. For small businesses, AI video generators are seen as a way to gain a competitive edge by creating marketing content more efficiently and affordably. These tools help cut costs associated with hiring editors and actors, save time on scripting and filming, and allow for rapid A/B testing of different messages and visuals to optimize for engagement and sales conversions. The technology enables the scaling of personalized content, allowing e-commerce brands to create unique product videos for different audience segments or promotions without a significant increase in costs. This is particularly useful for social media marketing, where AI tools can analyze trends and help maintain a consistent posting schedule. However, the ease of creating AI-generated content raises copyright concerns, as AI models are often trained on existing media. YouTube's updated policies clarify that AI-generated content infringing on copyright will result in strikes or removal, just like any other copyrighted material. Creators using AI tools are responsible for ensuring they have the rights to the media they generate and use.
