Food Supply Chains Hit by Reefer Capacity Crisis

Iran conflict is disrupting global food supply chains, hitting perishables hardest as reefer (refrigerated) capacity tightens with rerouting adding 10-20 extra days via Cape of Good Hope. Fresh produce, dairy, and meat face spoilage risks critical for healthy travel diets. Post-harvest losses of 20-40% worsen, pushing consumers toward ultra-processed alternatives as air cargo rates surge.

The current disruption centers on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global trade. Following military action, major shipping lines including Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and MSC suspended vessel transits, citing safety concerns and the waterway's effective closure by Iranian authorities. This has left cargo vessels either stuck in the Gulf or forced into lengthy and costly detours. The rerouting around Africa's Cape of Good Hope adds approximately 3,500 nautical miles to a voyage, costing an estimated extra $1 million in fuel per trip. This has driven a spike in operating costs, with shippers passing on expenses to clients through "war risk" and "emergency conflict" surcharges. Consequently, benchmark spot container rates, like the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, more than doubled in the first half of 2024 compared to late 2023 levels. This crisis hits a refrigerated container market that was already expanding rapidly, with a global value of over $1.5 billion in 2024 and projected annual growth of 8.8%. The sector's growth is fueled by rising global trade in perishable foods as well as temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, such as vaccines and biologics, which now rely heavily on these specialized containers. The disruption's impact extends beyond food, threatening the supply of nitrogen fertilizers from the Middle East ahead of the Northern Hemisphere's planting season. A prolonged blockage could lead to shortages
