Lines, missed flights spike

Traveler posts show TSA chaos in spots this week — Atlanta averaging 21‑minute waits and LaGuardia Terminal B reporting 90+ minute lines that caused missed connections. (x.com) A national snapshot the same day counted 84 cancellations and 468 delays, with Chicago O'Hare among the worst‑hit hubs. (travelandtourworld.com) (x.com)

Air travelers hit long security lines and a widening patchwork of delays this week, with Atlanta, LaGuardia and Chicago O’Hare among the airports drawing the most complaints. (tsa.gov) (flightaware.com) (faa.gov) The Transportation Security Administration’s MyTSA app gives travelers airport-by-airport checkpoint estimates, and the Port Authority tells New York-area passengers to check live security-line data before leaving home. LaGuardia’s official travel guidance also tells passengers to allow extra time for traffic, check-in and screening. (tsa.gov) (panynj.gov) (laguardiaairport.com) Chicago O’Hare was also dealing with air-traffic strain, not just checkpoint backups. The Federal Aviation Administration’s April 16 daily air traffic report said thunderstorms were forecast to slow flights in Chicago, and the agency’s airport-status page for O’Hare separately showed thunderstorm-related conditions this week. (faa.gov 1) (faa.gov 2) The Federal Aviation Administration’s national status board on April 17 listed a delay program for LaGuardia and flagged possible ground-stop or delay programs for O’Hare and Midway later in the day. That means some missed trips were being driven by weather and air-traffic controls as well as the lines passengers saw at security. (fly.faa.gov) (nasstatus.faa.gov) The timing is difficult for travelers because airports are still running near the heavy volumes Transportation Security Administration officials warned about ahead of the 2025 spring-break and summer rush. TSA said in March 2025 that spring-break passenger counts were expected to rise more than 5% and urged passengers to arrive early during peak periods. (tsa.gov) TSA’s checkpoint data shows how little slack the system has on busy days. The agency screened more than 2.82 million people on April 17, 2025, and topped 3 million on May 23, 2025, according to its archived daily counts. (tsa.gov) Another pressure point is identification screening. TSA finalized REAL ID enforcement for May 7, 2025, and the Department of Homeland Security said travelers showing noncompliant IDs would face additional screening measures at checkpoints nationwide. (tsa.gov) (dhs.gov) Airports and airlines now push passengers toward live tools instead of fixed arrival rules. The Port Authority says travelers should check real-time security lines, parking and rideshare conditions before heading to LaGuardia, while the Federal Aviation Administration says airport-status notices show general conditions and passengers still need to confirm flight-specific problems with their airline. (panynj.gov) (fly.faa.gov) For passengers, the result is the same one seen in the latest posts from terminals: a trip can unravel in more than one place, from the security queue to the departure board.
