Ortiz-Ennis Fight in Jeopardy

Eddie Hearn says the next few days are critical to finalize Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs Jaron "Boots" Ennis, but a Nevada judge granted Golden Boy's motion to compel arbitration in their dispute with Ortiz. This legal victory could put Ortiz's career on hold and force Ennis to pursue other opponents. The highly anticipated welterweight clash may be delayed indefinitely.

The roots of the conflict trace back to a three-year contract extension Vergil Ortiz Jr. signed with Golden Boy Promotions in May 2024. Ortiz's lawsuit, filed on January 15, 2026, argued that the deal was contingent on Golden Boy maintaining a broadcast partnership with DAZN, which he claimed expired on December 31, 2025. Golden Boy contended that their "distribution relationship" with DAZN continued, even without a finalized long-term contract, and pointed to ongoing negotiations for a new deal. A Nevada judge ultimately sided with the promoter, granting their motion to compel arbitration and issuing an injunction that prevents Ortiz from negotiating with other parties until the matter is resolved. The parties are required to provide a status update on the arbitration by September 2, 2026. This legal battle sidelines a highly anticipated clash between two of boxing's most formidable undefeated fighters. Vergil Ortiz Jr. boasts a record of 24 wins with 22 knockouts, while Jaron "Boots" Ennis holds an unblemished record of 35 wins with 31 knockouts. Both men hold interim titles at 154 pounds, setting the stage for a major unification bout. With Ortiz's future uncertain, Jaron Ennis is forced to consider other opponents. Ennis, who moved up to the junior middleweight division in June 2025, is now looking at other top contenders to maintain his activity and career momentum. Promoter Eddie Hearn has identified two primary targets for Ennis's next fight. One potential opponent is unified WBO and WBA champion Xander Zayas, who holds an undefeated record of 23-0. Another option is the new IBF champion, Josh Kelly, who recently won his title in January 2026.
