New Audi RS5 Out-Powers R8

The new Audi RS5 has made headlines by out-powering the iconic R8 supercar. Reviewers note that the plug-in hybrid RS5 delivers a driving experience that belies its hybrid badge, combining efficiency with a thrilling performance envelope.

The new RS5 achieves its superior output through a plug-in hybrid system, mating a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine with an electric motor. The V6 engine itself produces 503 horsepower, an increase from the previous generation's 444 hp, and the electric motor adds another 174 horsepower. This combination results in a total system output of 630 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque. This figure narrowly surpasses the final iterations of the R8. The R8 V10 Performance Quattro model, featuring a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine, produced between 602 and 620 horsepower. The immediate torque from the RS5's electric motor is designed to eliminate turbo lag, providing instant acceleration. The transition to a plug-in hybrid marks a significant shift for Audi's RS lineup, moving away from purely internal combustion engines. The new RS5 is capable of traveling up to 50 miles on electric power alone, according to European test cycles. However, this hybrid system adds considerable weight, with the new RS5 weighing around 5,200 pounds, a significant increase over its predecessor. Production of the iconic Audi R8 officially ended in March 2024, concluding the era of Audi's V10-powered, mid-engine supercar. The final car to roll off the production line was a Vegas Yellow R8 V10 Performance Quattro Edition. The R8, first introduced in 2006, shared its platform and engine with the Lamborghini Gallardo and later the Huracán. There is currently no direct successor announced for the R8, though there is speculation about a future electric revival.
