Detroit Gets New Asian Street Food Spot
Sunda launched as a new Southeast Asian street food wonderland in downtown Detroit, offering a modern pan-Asian dining experience with vibrant décor and diverse menu. The restaurant brings authentic street food flavors to Detroit's growing food scene.
Sunda's arrival in Detroit marks its fifth location, joining spots in Chicago, Nashville, and Tampa. The restaurant officially opens its doors at 33 W. Columbia Street on March 10. The brand was founded in Chicago in 2009 by Billy Dec, a two-time Emmy Award-winning TV personality and entrepreneur. The name "Sunda" refers to the Sunda Shelf, a landmass that connected Southeast Asia during the Ice Age, creating a rich culinary exchange. The restaurant's "New Asian" concept draws inspiration from Dec's Filipino heritage and travels, offering dishes from Japan, China, Thailand, the Philippines, and more. Dec was inspired to share the cuisine he grew up with after initially feeling like an outsider because of it as a child. Owner Billy Dec is a Chicago native and lawyer who transitioned into the hospitality industry, founding the Rockit Ranch Productions management company. A familiar face on shows like NBC's TODAY Show, he has also acted in series like "Criminal Minds" and "Empire." In 2015, President Obama appointed Dec to the White House Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The 6,000-square-foot Detroit interior was designed by Studio K with local firms McIntosh Poris Associates and Sachse Construction. It features a design blending Tokyo street style with Southeast Asian warmth, including an art installation over the bar inspired by both Japanese Cherry Blossoms and Michigan Apple Blossoms. The kitchen is led by Culinary Director Mike Morales, who is of Filipino heritage and has been with the company since its first location, and Head Sushi Chef Ise Matsunobu from Tokyo. Diners can expect signature dishes that have gained popularity at other locations, such as Oxtail Potstickers, Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, and Miso-Glazed Sea Bass. The menu also features a 3-pound Japanese Wagyu Tomahawk steak and an extensive list of sake, Japanese whiskies, and Asian beers.
