Venice Biennale Reveals 2026 Artists

The Venice Biennale has announced its participating artists for the 2026 edition, with the curatorial team working to bring the late Koyo Kouoh's vision to life. The team is emphasizing inclusivity and cross-cultural dialogue in their approach to this year's global contemporary art showcase. The Biennale remains one of the art world's most prestigious events for discovering emerging artists and trends.

- The 61st International Art Exhibition is titled "In Minor Keys," a theme conceived by the late curator Koyo Kouoh to favor intimacy and poetic subtlety over "orchestral bombast". - Kouoh, who was the executive director and chief curator of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, was the first African woman selected to curate the Venice Biennale. - Following Kouoh's sudden death in May 2025, the Biennale decided to realize her exhibition as she had envisioned it, with a team she appointed now leading the project. - The exhibition will feature 111 artists and artist collectives, with a significant number from the Global South, and is scheduled to run from May 9 to November 22, 2026. - The curatorial framework includes motifs such as Shrines, Procession/Invocation, Schools, and the Creole Garden, drawing inspiration from authors like Toni Morrison and Gabriel Garcia-Márquez. - One of the performance pieces will be a procession of poets in the Giardini, inspired by a "Poetry Caravan" Kouoh organized in 1999 where nine African poets traveled from Dakar to Timbuktu. - Before her passing, Kouoh had already fully developed the theoretical framework, selected the artists, determined the graphic identity, and designed the exhibition spaces for "In Minor Keys".
