Braiden Ward, a 27-year-old Red Sox outfielder, tied a 20-year-old MLB spring training record with 16 stolen bases in 17 attempts. The previous record was set by Eugenio Velez of the San Francisco Giants in 2008. Ward was acquired by the Red Sox in a November trade with the Colorado Rockies. Red Sox manager Alex Cora has taken notice of Ward's speed, stating "The speed is real". Ward led the Pac-12 in steals in 2018, 2019, and in the shortened 2020 season while playing for the Washington Huskies. For his college career, Ward had 89 stolen bases in 104 attempts.
