UMI moving into NoMad
Atlanta-born fine dining concept UMI will open a New York NoMad location with a soft launch planned for June and a full public opening this fall — part of a broader spring restaurant migration into NYC What Now.
UMI will occupy 63 Madison Avenue in the NoMad/Flatiron corridor. (whatnow.com) The project’s interiors are being handled by French firm Gilles & Boissier, according to press coverage. (nationaltoday.com) Reports list the new space at about 4,000 square feet in one dispatch and roughly 5,000 square feet in others, reflecting different published estimates. (whatnow.com) The planned layout includes a main dining room, a sushi bar, a private dining room and a separate omakase room, signaling a split service model rather than an omakase-only format. (whatnow.com) UMI’s New York kitchen will be led by co-executive chefs Kazuo Yoshida and Todd Dae Kulper, per the announcement. (whatnow.com) Yoshida’s resume includes stints at New York spots like Juku and Jewel Bako and long experience in omakase service, which the Atlanta outpost has recently amplified. (fb101.com) Founders Farshid Arshid and Charlie Hendon, who opened UMI in Atlanta in 2013, are behind the expansion. (whatnow.com) Their Atlanta operation has added exclusive offerings such as an eight-seat omakase (M @ Umi) and a bespoke private Murphy Room, details the owners have promoted. (modernluxury.com) Local coverage frames UMI as a celebrity-magnet Southern export and notes the move places it steps from Madison Square Park alongside high-profile neighbors like Eleven Madison Park and The Ned Nomad.
