Axel Springer Buys Bisnow

German media giant Axel Springer has acquired Bisnow, a major commercial real estate media and events company. The deal signals ongoing consolidation in B2B media, as large players look to snap up platforms with engaged, niche professional audiences.

The acquisition of Bisnow is part of Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner's broader strategy to expand the company's digital reach and invest in English-speaking markets with dedicated professional audiences. This follows a pattern of high-profile U.S. media acquisitions, including spending over $1 billion for POLITICO in 2021 and $343 million for a controlling stake in Business Insider in 2015. Bisnow was founded in 2005 by Mark Bisnow and has grown into a major B2B platform in the commercial real estate sector. The company combines digital news, newsletters reaching over 650,000 subscribers, and the production of around 300 industry events annually across North America. The seller was The Wicks Group, a private equity firm that acquired Bisnow in May 2016 for an estimated $50 million. Under Wicks' ownership and the leadership of CEO Will Friend, who was appointed in 2015 at age 27, the company continued its expansion. Tragically, Friend passed away unexpectedly in 2022. The deal comes after a significant restructuring at Axel Springer. In a €13.5 billion deal, the company spun off its classifieds business to private equity firm KKR to become a debt-free, privately-owned media company focused on digital journalism. Döpfner's stated goal is to double the company's value within five years by focusing on direct audience engagement and leveraging artificial intelligence.
