Milan Design Week: dates and highlights

Milan Design Week is set for April 21–26 and will mix Rho exhibitions with citywide events — including a one-night public opening of design and architecture archives on April 24 called Common Archive – La Notte Bianca del Progetto. ( ).

Milan’s biggest design week now works like a two-part city: the trade fair runs at Fiera Milano Rho from April 21 to April 26, 2026, while the off-site program called Fuorisalone starts a day earlier and spreads across the city from April 20 to April 26. (salonemilano.it, fuorisalone.it) The Rho fair is the business engine. Salone del Mobile says the 2026 edition is its 64th, and this year’s layout brings back the biennial kitchen and bathroom shows alongside the main furniture halls. (salonemilano.it, salonemilano.it) That split is why Milan Design Week feels bigger than a normal fair. One half is brands showing products to buyers, and the other half is palazzos, courtyards, galleries, and storefronts turning into temporary exhibitions across the city. (comune.milano.it, fuorisalone.it) The scale is already visible in the official listings. Fuorisalone’s guide says Milan Design Week 2026 has 846 events, which is why visitors usually plan by neighborhood instead of trying to cross the whole city in one day. (fuorisalone.it, fuorisalone.it) The new event people are circling is not a product launch at all. On Friday, April 24, Common Archive – La Notte Bianca del Progetto will open Milan’s design and architecture archives to the public for one evening from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (salonemilano.it, designboom.com) That matters because archives are usually the back rooms of design culture: appointment-only spaces with drawings, prototypes, letters, and models that explain how famous objects were actually made. Salone del Mobile describes them as “active spaces” where design is stored, organized, and made available again. (salonemilano.it) The citywide archive opening is large enough to feel like its own festival inside the festival. Domus reports that more than 150 archives will take part, including house-studios and collections linked to figures such as Achille Castiglioni, Franco Albini, Vico Magistretti, and Gae Aulenti. (domusweb.it, designboom.com) Salone del Mobile is also trying to pull the fair back into the city before the gates open at Rho. Its temporary “Design Kiosk” returns from April 17 to April 26, 2026, as part of a public program meant to connect the trade event with Milan’s streets and cultural venues. (salonemilano.it, salonemilano.it) So the practical way to read this year’s week is simple. April 21 to April 26 is for the industrial side of design at Rho, April 20 to April 26 is for the citywide installations, and April 24 is the night when the locked cabinets and paper trails come out into public view.
