OpenAI Ships GPT-5.3 Instant, Aims to be Less 'Cringe'
OpenAI has released GPT-5.3 Instant, a major refinement of its fastest model for both ChatGPT and API users. The update focuses on reducing unnecessary refusals, improving factual accuracy, and providing a more natural conversational flow. It's now the default model, aimed at being less "cringe" and more reliable for high-frequency agentic or consumer-facing apps.
The GPT-5.3 Instant update is a direct response to user feedback about its predecessor, GPT-5.2 Instant, which was criticized for being overly cautious and unnatural in its responses. OpenAI's goal is to make everyday interactions with ChatGPT feel smoother and more reliable by improving the tone, relevance, and conversational flow. This new model promises a significant reduction in "hallucinations," with internal benchmarks showing a 26.8% decrease when using web search for information and a 19.7% decrease when relying on its internal knowledge. For developers, this increased reliability is a key factor, as a model that confidently fabricates information is difficult to implement in real-world applications. The update also aims to provide more direct answers, reducing unnecessary refusals and long, moralizing disclaimers before addressing a prompt. GPT-5.3 Instant is designed to better understand user intent and provide a straightforward answer when the request is reasonable. While the focus is on a more natural user experience, there have been some trade-offs. Internal safety evaluations show slight regressions in preventing disallowed sexual content and self-harm related outputs compared to previous versions. Additionally, performance on a health-related benchmark saw a marginal decrease. This release comes after a period of significant leadership changes at OpenAI. Former CTO Mira Murati, who was instrumental in the development of products like ChatGPT and DALL-E, left the company in September 2024. In February 2025, she launched a new AI startup called Thinking Machines Lab. For developers and API users, GPT-5.3 Instant is now available under the name "gpt-5.3-chat-latest". The previous version, GPT-5.2 Instant, will be accessible as a legacy model for a few months before being phased out.
