NYPD Officers Suspended After Fatal Chase

Several NYPD officers have been suspended amid an investigation into a high-speed chase that ended in a fatal crash. The officers are under scrutiny for allegedly abandoning the pursuit just before the collision, raising questions about police protocols and accountability.

The two suspended officers, assigned to the 50th Precinct, allegedly pursued a stolen Honda CR-V driven by 31-year-old Francisco Andres Guzman Parra down the Henry Hudson Parkway into Manhattan. The chase ended when the vehicle, reportedly traveling at nearly 100 miles per hour, crashed into a building off the Dyckman Street exit in Inwood and caught fire. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the marked patrol car leaving the scene of the crash. The officers are accused of returning to their precinct, finishing their shift, and signing out without ever reporting the pursuit or the fatal collision. The Fire Department later responded to a report of a car fire, where they discovered Guzman Parra's body. This incident occurred just months after the NYPD implemented a stricter vehicle pursuit policy on February 1, 2025. The new directive explicitly forbids chases for traffic infractions and non-violent misdemeanors, limiting them to cases involving serious and violent crimes. This policy change was a response to a significant rise in police pursuits, with 2,278 recorded in 2024, roughly a quarter of which resulted in collisions, damage, or injuries. The family of Francisco Andres Guzman Parra is now demanding the officers be fired and held accountable, highlighting that they were not notified of his death until four days after the crash. The NYPD's Force Investigation Division and the New York State Attorney General's Office are investigating the "unauthorized pursuit" and the officers' actions. The Police Benevolent Association has cautioned against a rush to judgment while the investigation is ongoing.
