Marathon Players Crack Terminal Puzzle

Marathon players solved a complex terminal puzzle over the weekend, revealing details about the next unlockable map called the Cryo Archive. The community discovery came after collaborative clue-hunting and marks a major milestone for the game's evolving narrative.

The puzzle was an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) that began when previously dormant computer terminals flickered to life on the game's "Perimeter" map. This kicked off a multi-stage challenge that required players to move beyond in-game shooting and collaborate on a wider mystery. Players discovered that activating three pairs of terminals in a specific sequence revealed audio logs from Durandal, a rogue AI from the original Marathon trilogy's lore. These terminals also provided cryptic clues that, when pieced together, led the community to a hidden website: Cryoarchives Systems. The website displayed several broken video feeds from the Cryo Archive, with progress bars that updated every 15 minutes. The community, with help from hints dropped by Bungie in the official Discord, realized that large numbers of players needed to activate specific terminals on the Perimeter map during these short intervals to clear up the video feeds. This massive, coordinated effort was organized across platforms like Discord, Twitch, and Reddit, with content creators like MrRoflWaffles convincing entire game lobbies to cease fighting and focus on solving the ARG. The successful completion of this first stage is reportedly just step three of a 13-step puzzle that will likely involve other websites and further community cooperation. The revealed video feeds offered the first glimpse of the Cryo Archive, the game's promised "endgame" map. This area is expected to be a significant departure, focusing on intense encounters and complex puzzle-solving, drawing comparisons to the "Vault of Glass" moment in Bungie's other major title, Destiny. Lore-wise, the Cryo Archive is located on the Marathon ship, which had mysteriously gone dark. The garbled video feeds even contain what some players believe to be a ghostly figure, hinting at the presence of the S'pht, a cybernetically enhanced alien race that may have taken over the ghostship.
