Northern Trust, BNY Mellon Tokenize Fund
Two financial giants, Northern Trust and BNY Mellon, are teaming up on asset tokenization. Northern Trust has launched a tokenized share class of one of its Treasury funds on BNY's digital asset platform, a major step in bridging traditional finance with blockchain technology.
The tokenized shares represent Northern Trust's NIF Treasury Instruments Portfolio and are being offered via BNY's LiquidityDirect platform. This platform utilizes the Goldman Sachs Digital Asset Platform (GS DAPĀ®), a permissioned blockchain infrastructure, meaning it is not on a public network like Ethereum. The structure creates a "digital mirror record" of the fund's institutional shares, with BNY maintaining the official records while the blockchain provides a secondary, tokenized ledger. This collaboration joins a rapidly expanding market for tokenized U.S. Treasurys, which has grown by over $1 billion since the start of 2026 to a market capitalization exceeding $10.8 billion. The sector has seen exponential growth, expanding roughly fiftyfold since 2024, driven by institutional demand for the efficiency and transparency that blockchain offers. The move places Northern Trust and BNY Mellon among other financial giants entering the space. BlackRock's BUIDL fund, launched in March 2024, is a dominant player with a market capitalization over $1.2 billion, and Franklin Templeton also operates a significant on-chain government money fund. This trend is not limited to asset managers; the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC), which processed over $3.7 quadrillion in transactions in 2024, is also launching its own tokenization service for U.S. Treasurys. The primary drivers for institutional adoption of tokenization include increased transparency, faster settlement times, and improved operational efficiency. By representing fund shares as tokens, firms aim to streamline transactions and enhance visibility for investors. This specific offering is targeted at institutional clients and will be available only through authorized intermediaries.
