Telangana Aims for Global Logistics Hub Status

The state of Telangana is developing a strategic roadmap to establish itself as a global logistics hub by 2047. The plan focuses on modernizing infrastructure and streamlining supply chains through advanced technology, automation, and digital platforms. Hyderabad's role as a growing center for SaaS and technology innovation is considered central to achieving this goal.

This initiative is a core component of the "Telangana Rising 2047" vision, which aims to transform the state into a $3 trillion economy. The logistics sector is designated as a key driver for this growth, with a goal to increase Telangana's contribution to India's GDP from its current 5% to 10% by 2047. The strategy was outlined by IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu at the Transport Logistic India 2026 conference in Mumbai. A forthcoming "Telangana Logistics Policy 2.0" and an Integrated Logistics Master Plan will guide this transformation. The policy is built on six pillars: infrastructure and multimodal integration, digital and smart logistics, regulatory simplification, green logistics, skill development, and investment promotion. This framework will support the phased development of logistics parks, warehousing zones, and air-cargo facilities integrated with road, rail, and air networks. Major infrastructure projects are already underway to bolster connectivity. These include the Regional Ring Road (RRR), Metro Rail Phase-II, and the development of new airports and a dry port. The state is leveraging its central geographical location to become a crucial inland distribution hub, connecting manufacturing clusters with national and international markets. Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is central to these plans, with its cargo handling capacity set to more than double to 350,000 metric tons annually by early 2026 through terminal upgrades and new construction. In 2024, the airport handled 180,914 metric tons of cargo, a 22% increase from the previous year, with international cargo surging by 36%. Pharmaceuticals currently constitute 72% of total exports from the airport. The government is actively seeking private investment in multi-modal logistics, rail-linked infrastructure, cold chain storage, and Grade-A warehousing. To foster a skilled workforce, the state is collaborating with Young India Skills University and other industry partners to align training programs with the evolving demands of the logistics and supply chain sector. The plan emphasizes the integration of AI-enabled logistics and green mobility solutions to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Telangana's strategy includes creating distinct economic zones, with the Peri-Urban Region Economy (PURE) zone, situated between the Outer and Regional Ring Roads, specifically marked for manufacturing and logistics growth.
