Motorola Challenges Foldable Market Leaders
At MWC 2026, Motorola unveiled its latest Razr Fold, which reportedly features the brightest inner and outer screens of any current foldable phone. The new device signals renewed competition for Samsung and other incumbents in the premium foldable market.
The new Razr Fold's internal 8.1-inch display reaches a peak brightness of 6,200 nits, while its 6.6-inch cover screen hits 6,000 nits. This significantly surpasses the brightness of competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which has a peak brightness of around 1,750 nits, and the Google Pixel Fold, with a peak of about 1,550 nits. This book-style foldable marks a new form factor for Motorola's revived Razr line, which re-entered the market in 2019 with a clamshell design reminiscent of its iconic V3 flip phone from 2004. The brand's history is rooted in creating fashion-forward and iconic mobile phones. Under the hood, the Razr Fold is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. It also features a large 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging support. Motorola has also equipped the Razr Fold with a versatile triple-camera system on the rear, featuring a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. For selfies, there is a 32MP camera on the cover display and a 20MP camera on the internal screen. This move places Motorola in direct competition with established players in a growing market. In late 2025, Samsung held a dominant 64% of the global foldable market. The overall foldable market is projected to see significant growth, with some analysts predicting a 30% increase in shipments in 2026.
