Irish Health Services Save Millions of Hours

The Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) reports that AI has saved over a million staff hours in the last five years, targeting another half-million this year.

The HSE's AI strategy, called "AI for Care", focuses on supporting clinical decisions, improving public health initiatives, advancing research, and streamlining operations. The time savings have been primarily in the operations area, achieved through automating processes in public health, HR, and finance. The "AI for Care" strategy emphasizes that AI's role is to work alongside clinical expertise, not replace it, acting as a "wing man" to healthcare professionals. Robust safeguards, including mandatory human oversight, are considered essential. Examples of AI in use include AI-assisted radiography interpretation, predictive modeling, ambient scribing, AI-based translation, and process automation. AI can also improve processing speed and accuracy of test results in cancer screening programs. The HSE is also developing an AI and Automation Centre of Excellence (CoE) to set rules for AI tool usage and support innovation. The HSE applies a strict governance framework based on the EU AI Act, classifying AI projects by risk and ensuring transparency, human oversight, clear documentation, and accuracy. The AI in HSE market is expected to reach $4.2 billion by 2027, driven by the demand for real-time safety management and improved ROI. AI-powered tools can automate compliance tracking, monitor emissions, and detect unsafe behavior in real-time, leading to significant reductions in regulatory penalties and incidents.
